Betsy’s No Garlic American Indian Fry Bread

Adapted by Betsy Vail 06/15/15 from the Manataka American Indian Council (http://www.manataka.org/page180.html)

Ingredients (makes 6+ large fry bread):
  • 6 c organic white flour
  • 3 c warm water
  • 3 Tbs baking powder
  • 2 tsp salt
  • Cooking oil (to fill a large skillet 1 cm deep)

Directions:

  1. Mix all ingredients in the bowl, kneading the dough until it’s no longer sticky. I used my Kitchenaid mixer with the dough hook to accomplish this. Add a little extra flour if needed.
  2. Divide the dough into baseball size balls, then flatten them into 8-9 inch wide by ¼ inch thick pancakes using either hands or a rolling pin.
  3. Fry in hot oil, turning once until golden brown and bubbly on both sides.
  4. Allow to rest on paper towels, then top with your favorite delicious addition toppings.
  5. Serve while hot and irresistibly delicious.
Delicious Additions (toppings):
Taco style:
Dessert style:
  • Powdered sugar
  • Honey
  • Jam
